Ques. What should be the actual value to define a rebar coupler’s type i.e. whether type 1 or type 2?
As mechanical splicing is now days a very common procedure to avoid congestion in reinforcement and and even being allowed by standards like an example ACI 12.14.3 says — Mechanical and welded splices
12.14.3.1 — Mechanical and welded splices shall be
permitted.
12.14.3.2 — A full mechanical splice shall develop in
tension or compression, as required, at least 1.25fy of
the bar.
21.1.6 — Mechanical splices in special moment
frames and special structural walls
21.1.6.1 — Mechanical splices shall be classified as
either Type 1 or Type 2 mechanical splices, as follows:
(a) Type 1 mechanical splices shall conform to
12.14.3.2;
(b) Type 2 mechanical splices shall conform to
12.14.3.2 and shall develop the specified tensile
strength of the spliced bar
That means for the Application of couplers categories as Type 1 and Type for different grades of bars should have their testing values in accordance with like this:_
Grade Of Rebar | Fy of rebar | For Type 1 ,UTS VALUE(Min) | For Type 2? Which Min Value we consider? |
415 | 415 | 415 * 1.25 = 518.75 | Type 1 +What value ? |
450 | 450 | 450*1.25 = 562.5 | Type 1 +What value ? |
500 | 500 | 500*1.25 =625 | Type 1 +What value ? |
550 | 550 | 550*1.25=687.5 | Type 1 +What value ? |
My query is what should be the minimum value to know which coupler is a type 2 coupler according to standard? Kindly Help!!!
